A magnetic separator is a device which contains a magnet that is used to remove impurities and waste magnetic materials from various metals and other products. These magnetic separators can be used at any point in the production of a material and can be altered to allow it to attract various magnetic materials at different intensity levels.

How is a magnetic separator used?

A magnetic separator contains a powerful magnet which is either placed inside a device or is suspended from the ceiling of a device. When a magnet is inside a device, materials can be passed over this to remove the impurities. If a magnet separator is suspended from the ceiling, materials can pass underneath the magnet for the impurities to be removed.

What magnets are used for separators?

In a magnet separator, the permanent magnet inside is very important as the quality of this magnet determines the performance of the separator. The permanent magnets used in magnet separators are typically made to a certain size and are called permanent magnet blocks. The permanent magnets that can be used for a magnet separator include ferrite, AlNiCo, SmCo, and neodymium magnets. Currently, the main type of magnet used for these separators is either ferrite magnets or neodymium magnets.

The following factors affect which magnet you would choose for your separator.

Magnetic field strength. In a magnetic separator there needs to be a constant magnetic field and the strength of this field determines which magnets is to be used. Neodymium magnets have much higher magnetic properties than ferrite magnets making them a more popular choice.

Stability requirements for the magnetic field. This means how adaptable the magnet is to environmental factors including temperature, humidity, and vibrations.
