APPLICATIONS OF NEODYMIUM MAGNETS

Neodymium magnets have a high strength and are one of the strongest magnets in the world. Even tiny neodymium magnets can be effective due to this high strength. This also makes them very versatile, nearly everyone right now will probably have one in their pocket if they have a smart phone.

Hard Disk Drives

Hard disk drives record data by magnetising and demagnetising a film of ferromagnetic material on a disk. Each disk is separated into multiple tracks and sectors, with each sector having tiny magnetic cells which are magnetised by the drives head when data is written. The hard drive head is manufactured from ferrite wrapped in a wire coil, this coil is energised and forms a strong magnetic field, which then magnetises the adjacent surface.

Audio Equipment

Permanent magnets, such as neodymium magnets, are used in speakers alongside a coil which converts electricity into mechanical energy, which in turn moves the speaker cone. This movement changes the pressure of the surrounding air, generating sound. Microphones work reversely, with sound moving the diaphragm which is attached to the coil. When the coil moves through the magnetic field around the magnet, an electrical signal is produced which replicates the original sound.

Door Catches

Neodymium magnets are used in all buildings, whether public, commercial or residential buildings, to create magnetic door catches. Magnets are recessed into the doors and are used to attract a wall mounted magnet or disk. Strong magnets hold the weight of a door closed and the leverage of the door allows the magnets to be easily separated.

Magnetically Coupled Pumps

Magnetically coupled pumps are made up of a motor-driven shaft attached with a ring of magnets and a smaller ring of magnets attached to another shaft which is connected to the impeller that is in the larger ring of magnets. When the drive shaft and one set of magnets turns, it generates a magnetic field which then turns the other set of magnets which powers the impeller. Here there is no mechanical contact between both the impeller and motor. The advantage of this is that the motor can still turn if the impeller is obstructed. You can also completely separate a magnetically coupled motor, separating the motor unit from the impeller, which allows you to clean or remove any obstructions.

Dentures

Neodymium magnets can often be used in dentures as attachments in corrective devices. They can also be used to hold together replacement dentures where some teeth are missing. Due to their strength, tiny magnets are effective enough to be used and are also corrosion resistant when coated.

Neodymium Magnets

Motors and Generators

Electric motors work using an electromagnet and a permanent magnet, mostly neodymium magnets. The permanent magnet converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Generators are the opposite by moving a conductor through a magnetic field to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Jewellery

Small neodymium magnets are often used in the production of jewellery and also in jewellery clasps. Neodymium magnets that have opposite poles provide a secure hold, and due to neodymium magnets being one of the strongest magnetic materials, a really small magnet, just 5mm in diameter, will be effective.

Neodymium Magnets

Bearings

Magnetic bearings use magnetic levitation to support the moving parts of a bearing without any physical contact. This enables relative motion with very low friction and very little mechanical wear, even at high speeds. Passive magnetic bearings use permanents magnets, for example, neodymium magnets. Active magnetic bearings use electromagnets.

MRI Scanners

MRI scanners generate a magnetic field to align the protons in the human body in the direction of the magnetic field. Radio waves are used to produce highly detailed internal images, this is done by directing the radio frequency waves at the body. MRI machines tend to use large neodymium magnets to help produce the large magnetic fields.

Magnetic Therapy

Some people believe that magnets can relieve pain in the body. They do this by subjecting the body parts with the magnetic fields produced by permanent magnets. Due to their strength, neodymium magnets are a popular choice for magnetic therapy.

ABS System Sensors

Some ABS sensors use neodymium magnets that are wrapped inside copper coils. A sensor is placed next to the ABS reluctor ring which induces a voltage in the copper wire when the ring rotates. The signal generated is monitored by the computer system in the vehicle and is used to define the wheel speed.

Lifting Machinery

Permanent magnets such as neodymium magnets are essential when it comes to heavy engineering and manufacturing industries which need to lift large ferrous items. Switchable release magnets that use neodymium magnets are often used because they are supplied with a quick-release switching mechanism.
