What is an electromagnet?

An electromagnet is slightly different to a permanent magnet. An electromagnet exerts a magnetic field which is produced by the flow of electric current. If the current is turned off the magnetic field will disappear. An electromagnet is made up of many turns of copper wire to form a solenoid and when a DC current flows around this coil a magnetic field is created. When an iron core is inserted into the centre of the solenoid, it becomes magnetic but will become nonmagnetic if the current stops flowing.
