Magnets for Speakers

Magnets are used in speakers as they convert the electrical current into mechanical waves to produce a sound by generating mechanical vibrations. Find out more about which magnets are used in speakers and how they are used to generate sound.

Which magnets are used in speakers?

There are a selection of magnets that can be used in magnets and these are AlNiCo, ceramic ferrite, and neodymium magnets. Each magnet has different properties and in turn has different effects on the tone and sound when used in a speaker.

AlNiCo Magnets

AlNiCo is the original magnet material that is used in speakers and it produces a classic tone. The speakers then often sound softer at lower volumes. AlNiCo magnets are less prone to cracking but are more likely to lose their magnetism.

Ceramic Ferrite Magnets

Ceramic magnets were used instead of AlNiCo magnets as they are more cost effective. When used in a speaker, they tend to be more versatile generating a wider range of tones Speakers with ceramic magnets tend to be cheaper and more versatile with a wider range of tones. They are generally able to handle more power and sound better at higher volumes.

Neodymium Magnets

Speakers with neodymium magnets tend to have a better frequency response. These speakers are more efficient as they weigh about 50% less than other speakers but can still use the same amount of power.

How do magnets in speakers work?

Inside a speaker there is an electromagnet known as the voice coil, this is made up of a permanent magnet that is surrounded by a coil of wire. An electric current runs through the wire coil which then generates a magnetic field, creating north and south polar orientations from the permanent magnet. These polar orientations can be switched by reversing the direction of the current through the coil. When the polar orientations are reversed, this changes the magnetic forces between the coil and the magnet causing the coil and attached diaphragm to constantly move back and forth.

The electromagnet and the permanent magnet work with each other to move the coil back and forth. The negative pole of the permanent magnet attracts the positive pole of the electromagnet and the negative pole of the permanent magnet repels the negative pole of the electromagnet. When the polar orientation of the electromagnet reverses, the direction of the attraction and repulsion also changes so it switches from being attracted in one direction to being repelled in the same direction. This constant switch in direction causes the coil to constantly move backwards and forwards like a piston.

This coil is attached to a cone and diaphragm so when the coil constantly moves back forth, it pulls and pushes on the cone and diaphragm. This movement vibrates the air in front of the speaker which causes sound waves. The rate and distance the voice coil moves is dictated by the frequency and amplitude of the waves. This then determines the frequency and amplitude of the waves produced by the diaphragm.
