Magnets for Headphones

Magnets play a key role in headphones as they need a magnetic field to turn the electric audio signals into sound waves. The headphone driver acts as the transducer and relies on magnets to effectively convert the energy.

How do magnets work in headphones?

Headphones convert electrical energy into mechanical wave energy via electromagnetic induction. Electromagnetic induction occurs when voltage is produced across an electrical conductor in a changing magnetic field. A magnetic field is also generated around the conductor, if a voltage is passed across a conductor.

By passing an alternating current through a conductive coil, a magnetic field is produced around it. When this coil is placed next to a magnet, the two magnetic fields cause the magnet and coil to repel and attract each other. Having permanent magnets and a conductive diaphragm in headphones allows it to turn audio signals into sound waves.

What magnets are used in headphones?

Nearly all headphones utilise rare earth neodymium magnets which are the strongest type of permanent magnet available. They have become the standard magnet used in high quality audio products such as speakers and microphones. Neodymium magnets are made from an alloy which combines neodymium, iron and boron. This magnet produces very strong magnetic fields and weighs considerably less that other types of magnet. They are often coated with nickel or resilient plastic to enhance their durability and resistance to corrosion and rust.

What are the advantages of using neodymium magnets in headphones?

Neodymium magnets are a lot lighter in weight and are also smaller in size when compared to other magnets of the same strength. This makes them ideal for use in headphones, as they need to be lightweight whether you are wearing them or carrying them.

In comparison, neodymium magnets have a much greater magnetic energy than ferrite, SmCo and AlNiCo magnets. Specifically, when compared with ferrite magnets, headphones that use neodymium magnets are eight times better with their basic performance and sound clarity. Neodymium magnets are also capable of producing greater sound output and higher sensitivity and use less power to do so. They can also use a high magnetic flux which can help produce music at a high sound pressure level.

These qualities make neodymium magnets ideal for use in headphones due to their ability to create great sound outputs whilst being small and light enough to also fit into a small earbud.
