High Performance Magnets
What are magnetic domains?
Magnetic materials are split into individual microscopic domains. The domain structure of a material determines its magnetic characteristics, for example, those displayed by metallic elements. Each domain of a material is a region which has the same direction of magnetisation. However, some domains may have different directions of magnetisation. When the magnetic material is being manufactured, electromagnets are used to align each domain, resulting in the greatest magnetic energy and making the final material anisotropic (all domains align in the same direction).
